Two Joshua Chamberlain Civil War Service & Pension Documents

Two documents relating to Joshua Chamberlain (1828-1914), the ex-Union General, including one bearing a printed signature as "Joshua L. Chamberlain," and one with a secretarial signature as "J.L. Chamberlain."

The lot is comprised of:

1. A framed 1p document bearing the printed signature of Chamberlain as "Joshua L. Chamberlain" in his capacity as the Governor of Maine, countersigned in print by John C. Caldwell as Adjutant General. Issued from Augusta, Maine on July 4, 1868. The document affirmed the Civil War service of soldier Barack A. Hatch, who participated "in suppressing the Rebellion and thereby maintaining the integrity of the Union, the perpetuity of Republican Institutions and the liberties and peace of the People..." The borders of the document depict portraits of important Union Generals including Ulysses S. Grant, as well as military themed vignettes and the state seal of Maine at bottom. Evenly toned and with isolated stains and foxing. Framed behind glass in a mahogany-finished frame with gilt filet. Not examined out of the frame. Expected wear to the frame. The sight size of the document measures 15.5" x 11.5" while the overall frame size is 17.625" x 13.5" x 1.25."

2. A 1p document with Chamberlain's secretarial signature as "J.L. Chamberlain" at lower left, within a "true copy" prepared by Deputy Secretary of State J.H. Cochrane. Dated May 13, 1867. Pension Certificate #276 was issued to Margaret W. Carlisle of Bangor, Maine, the widow of a Civil War volunteer officer named Robert Carlisle, granting her the sum of $8 per month. With an embossed paper Maine state seal at lower left. Docketed verso. Expected folds and isolated foxing, else near fine. 8.375" x 13.25."

During the Civil War, Joshua Chamberlain's adept leadership of a Maine regiment earned him a Medal of Honor. At Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg, Chamberlain's forces repelled repeated Confederate attacks, eventually staging a dramatic down-hill bayonet charge and forcing the enemy's retreat. Chamberlain served as the 32nd Governor of Maine between 1867 and 1871.
