Item Details
Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. 1960s CE. A remarkable wooden anthropomorphic mask boasting a wrapped vegetal reed and brown cassowary feather periphery. The expressive visage features two annular, openwork eyes that allow the mask wearer to see. A long-beaked bird, likely a cassowary, sits in the middle of the face with the beak, head, and body forming the vizard's nose, the tail serving as the nasal crest, and the wings as a lengthy moustache with upward-pointing ends. An openwork ovoid mouth is displayed below the avian nose, and two egg-shaped ears are at the ends of the bird's wings. Coated in a rich hue of mocha pigment, the intriguing face showcases an elaborate decoration of incised striations and abstract geometric motifs with petite knots of raffia rope decorating the interior of each ear and the forehead. A fantastic mask that likely represented an ancestral or spiritual figure and is well preserved with bold features! Size: 8.125" W x 18.75" H (20.6 cm x 47.6 cm); 24" H (61 cm) on included custom stand.

The carved cassowary imagery on this piece is quite intricate, skillfully executed, and very symbolic. Cassowaries are featured in many Papua New Guinea legends and are believed to possess mystical powers. Some Papua New Guinea peoples are of the belief that cassowary birds are reincarnations of their female ancestors, while others revere the cassowary as their primeval mother. Still others believe that wielding a dagger carved from the bone of a cassowary bird makes one more powerful.
