Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. 20th century. A fascinating wooden stool displaying a discoid foot and seat with five figural legs in between; four on the edges and one at the center. Painted in hues of brown, russet, and cream, the stylized figures consist of two standing women in dresses, two standing men dressed in shirts and pants, and one man seated on a stool or stump of a tree at the center, nude for all but a fedora-like hat. The two men on the periphery each hold long tools or weapons in both hands and wear pointed hats, while the women, who present with large conical breasts, are positioned either grasping their chests or abdomens. All the beautifully sculpted figures have similar visages, consisting of a large half-moon eyes, broad noses, and full lips. Additionally, the periphery of the seat and foot are skillfully incised with a zigzag motif. Size: 17" diameter x 23.5" H (43.2 cm x 59.7 cm)

Condition
Expected chips, nicks, and abrasions throughout. Stable fissures through top, bottom, and central figure with 2 slender strips of metal for repair; one evident on top and the other on bottom. Lovely earthen deposits in some areas. Otherwise, very good with nice remaining pigment and detail.
