Description
Incised and gilt with hieroglyphs: a clock in a pylon-shaped case with a finely-incised dial; a pair of brass-finialled plinths, all with red marble moulded details (lot of 3 items).
Probably last quarter 19th century. Examples of Egyptian revival taste, this time probably encouraged by the interest generated by the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
Inside the clock housing is inscribed 1847, then in italics V19866... maybe last 4 digits l011 (refer to pics)
Given materials this is not only a stand-out large mantel clock garniture, it is also very heavy, estimate over 50lbs.
Great decorative interest.
