F.G. Deschamps e J.N. Fortin...... Paris, 1776" | by/after John Flamsteed (English 1646-1719) by Jean Nicholas Fortin (French 1750-1831) | Published: Paris, 1776 | A detailed star chart of the constellation Leo, Copperplate Hand-colored Engraving on Laid Paper | Approx. Size: 10.5 W x 9.25" H (26.5 x 23.5 cm) | Provenance: From a prominent private collection, Catania, Italy | John Flamsteed was the first Astronomer Royal at the London Observatory, a position in which Edmund Halley and Isaac Newton was considered. He made a copious and thorough study of the heavens, but refused to publish his works, despite the urgings of his colleagues, including Halley and Newton. Finally, his life's work was published posthumously in 1728, in what is now an extremely scarce to rare work. This later French edition was a tremendous success and is perhaps the most popular French language Celestial Atlas of the 18th Century.
