DESCRIPTION: (2 Pc) Framed John Tyrrell Plaster Intaglio Cameos - Number 44. and 7, depicting classical and historical subjects. This intaglios are a rare genuine antique plaster intaglios made circa 1840 by John Tyrrell. It includes his Leopard head trademark, signature and are numbered on the side of the gilt wrapped paper. They were made from casts of original gems purchased by Tyrrell from the famous Prince Poniatowski (1754 - 1833) Collection.
Prince Stanislas Poniatowski (1754-1833), the nephew of the last King of Poland, commissioned approximately 2500 gems in the neoclassical style by a group of gem-engravers in Rome. After his death, Poniatowski collection was offered for sale as ancient gems by Christie's in London in 1839. Once discovered that the gems were not ancient, the sale was unsuccessful, however, John Tyrrell acquired over 1000 and had numerous plaster casts made. Tyrrell published his collection in 1841 in a catalogue written by James Prendeville.
