Design in Motion: The Berkel Slicer Machine
On February 9th, Wright presents Design in Motion: The Berkel Slicer Machine, the first-ever auction dedicated to vintage flywheel slicing machines, kitchen scales and ephemera.
In 1898 a Dutch butcher by the name of Wilhelmus Adrianus van Berkel conceived of a machine that could replicate the most skilled hand, cutting cured meats into wafer thin slices using precise engineering and a very sharp blade. Drawing from his experience as a butcher and his passion for mechanics, van Berkel created the Model A slicer, the first of his many designs that would revolutionize the way that food is prepared and enjoyed across the world. With examples dating from as early as 1893 to the mid-1950s, this auction will feature thirty lots of slicers, kitchen scales and ephemera spanning the spectrum of design evolution. Crafted in enameled iron and polished steel, the machines express subtle elegance in both their aesthetic and engineering and have a place of pride in fine restaurants and home kitchens around the world.
