Important Paintings and Contemporary Art
2015 has witnessed strong growth in the secondary New Zealand art market with ART+OBJECT having to date this year transacted just over five and a quarter million dollars worth of New Zealand art across six auctions. The last ART+OBJECT major art sale for 2015 features two substantial collections. Firstly, the Whakairo Group Collection, centred in the capital, is a contemporary art buying group disbanding after its prerequisite ten year period and includes major contemporary works by Star Gossage, Seraphine Pick, Marti Friedlander, Warren Viscoe and others. The second collection of note is a private collection of major modern paintings including works by Gordon Walters, Gretchen Albrecht, Milan Mrkusich, Richard Killeen and others. Further individual highlights worthy of note include a major Peter Robinson 'percentage' painting, a beautiful mid-1960s Milan Mrkusich painting from the 'Elements' series, an important Tony Fomison painting of the Maori prophet Te Whiti o Rongomai and a two panel Stephen Bambury work from his 'Necessary Correction' series.
