American Historical Ephemera and Photography
From the arduous journey to emancipation to the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Freeman’s I Hindman’s American Historical Ephemera and Early Photography auction features documents, historical artifacts, and photography from throughout American history with a focus on the pioneering figures and key moments that shaped the African American experience over the last 300 years.
Highlights include photographs of Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass as well as a land indenture from the Freedmen’s Savings and Trust Company signed by Douglass; photographs, imprints, and ephemera involving Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his demonstrations, most notably an important suite of handbills and programs from the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom; and two rare Reconstruction-Era broadsides addressing Black suffrage.
Hindman strives to present historic materials in a manner that is respectful to all communities, providing descriptive contexts for objects where possible. The nature of historical ephemera is such that some material may represent positions, language, values and stereotypes that are not consistent with the values and practices at Hindman.
