Grandeur & Garden: A Litchfield Gentleman’s Collection On Thursday, February 1 Millea Bros. is proud to offer at auction a special single-owner collection, featuring the treasures of a magnificent Litchfield Connecticut estate. An impressive array of over 240 lots awaits discerning collectors, comprising mostly 19th-century European antiques and fine art, complemented by a selection of 20th-century works, spanning from the Aesthetic Movement to contemporary design. A weekend retreat of Manhattan fashion executives, this country manor sits on acres of rolling countryside adorned with formal French gardens. The main house exemplifies country grandeur, decorated with an eclectic assemblage of antiques and art, acquired through years of travel and collecting, and layered with the eye of professional tastemakers. Highlights include fine English, French, and Continental antique furniture, including seating in whimsical contemporary upholstery. European, American and Modern paintings feature a large Johann Hermann Carmiencke Hudson River School Landscape, and an important modern abstract oil by Paul Feiler. The core of the sale lies in its decorative objects – a treasure trove for collectors and decorators alike. Here, one can find remarkable collections of European porcelains and majolica, Anglo-Irish glass, and Grand Tour bronzes, as well as over 60 pieces of Palissy ware. Befitting the home of prodigious entertainers, the sale features numerous sets of dinnerware, flatware and stemware from Hermes, Wedgwood, Georg Jensen, Steuben, Venini and Barovier. Outdoor and garden items include 19th c. Italian marble statuary and English and American Victorian cast iron and stone furniture and planters. A small group of modern design includes chairs by Charlotte Perriand, glass by Carlo Scarpa, and Secessionist furniture and ceramics. In every item up for auction, the tastemakers' touch is palpable and is a testament to the owners' role as arbiters of style.
