The Grand Tour Sale

The Grand Tour Sale This sale is a celebration of the spirit of the Grand tour. A significant rite of passage for any young European gentleman of means, the 'Grand Tour', as it became known, took visitors to countries such as France, Switzerland, Greece, and most importantly, Italy. The impact of this influx of tourists on the visual arts is palpable as view painting blossomed, reaching its pinnacle in the mid-18th Century. Copies and studies of ancient statues and Renaissance masterpieces were high in demand, and visual records of the sights, in varying forms such as prints, ceramics and micromosaics, enjoyed great popularity. This auction is intended to capture richness and variety of this significant chapter in the history of the visual arts.
