Among them the probably most well-known representative from Germany Gustav Detring. For his humane and successful work, Empress Dowager Cixi awarded him the highest medal that existed for foreign citizens in the Chinese Empire. At the same time, Detring was personal advisor to the imperial family, but never saw his homeland again, since he died in China in 1913. His entire family left China in 1919 and returned to Germany. Later, due to the turmoil of the late 1920s, most family members emigrated to America. There are 15 exhibits in the auction. These included gifts from the imperial family, including an imperial seal. These pieces ended up in the German collection from the estate of a well-known American collector. The first pieces from Gustav Detring's collection to appear on the international art market were sold at high prices by Sotheby's in New York and London in 2018. Some exhibits achieved surcharges in the triple million euro range.
