August Americana | Bonhams Skinner

August Americana | Bonhams Skinner Bonhams Skinner's August Americana is a collection of 71 compelling lots sourced from New England to California, with an especially strong grouping of maritime artwork and portraiture. Featuring prominently is the collection of the late Henry S. Streeter, a lover of marine art, a long-time lawyer, and an avid sailor. He began sailing and collecting in the 1930s, and by the 1950s began a relationship with the Peabody Essex Museum where he remained involved as either a Trustee or Advisor until his death in 2001. He initially collected paintings made for ship captains, and as a sailor himself, appreciated that every line and every sail was meticulously correct. A rare and excellent pair of portraits attributed to Samuel Miller and a beautiful portrait of Almira Douglass by John Samuel Blunt complete the sale's highly desirable selection of paintings along with an oil on panel depiction of the Chinese port of Macau in the Pearl Delta, part of a Longmeadow, Massachusetts collection. Furniture on offer includes an extremely rare colourful Mahantongo Valley chest of drawers attributed to Johannes Mayer from Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, with two tall case clocks by well known Boston makers: one by Gawen Brown with a tiger maple case, and an Aaron Willard clock in a classic Roxbury case. We are lastly thrilled to present an exceptional and meticulously crafted live steam locomotive, the Breckenridge, from the workshop of the late Larry Vance. A retired mechanical engineer, his astounding attention to detail when building this fully operational, coal fired, 2 1/2" scale, 7 1/4" gauge model literally brought history to life. Only operated a few times, this locomotive is in virtually new condition. Previews available August 10th and 11th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturday, August 12th, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
