Cowperthwaite Collection of Chinese Art
Stunning Gallery is pleased to announce the sale of the Cowperthwaite collection of Chinese art.
During the later 1930s, and due to WW2 air raid concerns the Canmore Museum accessioned/liquidated its entire collection. The Museum is said to have sold thousands of Chinese art and Archaic art examples during this time. The main volume of the Museum?s collection is thought to have been donated by Sir David Percival. Alfred Cowperthwaite, a contributor of the museum, became good friends with the Museum Curator Harry Beasley. Both expressed a keen interest in Asian archaeology and Archaic bead history. Both are thought to have purchased large amounts of the Museums inventory during the liquidation. The family believes Alfred also acquired several items after Beasley?s death from his widow. The collection consists of a wide array of Qing dynasty and earlier ceramics. Along with an impressive array of Archaic jade and bronze objects.
