Antique Estates Auction
Kennedy's Auction Service is pleased to announce an antique estates auction featuring the estate of Mrs. Laurie Walthal of Memphis, Tennessee. Mrs. Laurie was a lifelong Memphian, and was very proud of her city and its history. She was very involved in her church and local charities. In 1987, Mrs. Laurie Served as President of the Memphis Country Club and was a lifelong member. It is easy to see that Mrs. Laurie held the pieces that make up her collection close to her heart because of the time and effort she spent in preserving and caring for her collection. Most of the pieces that make up her impressive collection descended to her from her father and grandfather, who were past Presidents of the Memphis Cotton Exchange, as well as from her late husband Edward W. Walthal's family. The Walthal family has been in the Memphis real estate business for three generations. One of the more interesting pieces in the sale is the Walthal Real Estate Companies roll top desk built by the Gunn Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Desk is massive in size at 72 inches in width, and has undoubtedly witnessed many of the real estate transactions that have shaped Memphis into the city we know today. Two of the paintings in the auction are by Fredric Tanqueray Anderson (1846-1926) who worked as a book keeper in the Memphis Cotton Exchange. In 1889, Anderson studied under the French Impressionist Camille Pissarro, and in 1894, he became a frequent contributor to Harper's Weekly, Leslie's, and other illustrated magazines of the period. This will prove to be one of the finest auctions ever held in the mid-south.
