19th-21st Century Photography
Considering the scarcity of early photographs, Bassenge's upcoming photography auction offers an unusually large number of well-preserved salt and albumen prints from the early days of photography's history, such as a view of Rome by E. Constant (1852), or a large panorama of Canton by Dutton & Michaels (1863). The historically and artistically significant photographs from the collection of Ernst August of Hannover are of particular interest (lots 4122-4139), including rare earlier travel photography (Venice) by D. Bresolin.
The 20th century and contemporary section also offers a wide range of high quality prints. The photographers include representatives of classical modernism, the New Vision, advertising and object photography, as well as German Fotoform photographers. Enthusiasts of great American photographers will also find excellent works by H. Callahan, W. Evans, N. Goldin, A. Frajndlich, H. Edgerton, R. Mapplethorpe and others. A particularly impressive image captured by L. Bielik in 1968, during the occupation of Czechoslovakia (lot 4169), as well as J. Chaldej's "Atop the Reichstag" (lot 4189) and the "Genuflection of Warsaw" (lot 4273) have become iconic images of an era.
Our June auction offers a good opportunity for discerning collectors to enrich their collection with rare vintage material. Other names included are: D. Appelt, H. Bayer, Brassai, L. Clergue, A. Feininger, H. Finsler, H. Hajek- Halke, P. Keetman, J. Klauke, G. Krull, Man Ray, A. Renger-Patzsch, A. Sander, etc.
