Strong Diversions: The Strong Museum of Play

This spring, Hindman’s Asian art department is proud to offer Asian works of art from The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. This property in this sale is largely comprised of objects from the personal collection of its founder, Margaret Woodbury Strong (1897-1969). Highlights include many of the small porcelains, metalwork, and scholar’s objects Margaret collected throughout her travels in China and Japan, including a Yongzheng mark and period bowl, a delicate selection of jade snuff bottles and jewelry, and a range playful animal-form objects. The sale also includes a vast offering of the fine Japanese sagemono Margaret inherited from her mother, who amassed one of the world’s largest collections of portable script sets. The March 28th auction supports the Strong’s ongoing mission to celebrate a shared language of play while allowing these treasured objects connect with further generations of inspired collectors. This auction is complimented by the Asian Works of Art Online auction, open exclusively for bidding on Hindman.
