Mrs. Karin R. Ellis was born in Hamburg, Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1956 following her marriage to Carl W. Berhens. She married Mr. T. Kenneth Ellis in 1969, after the death of both their spouses, and moved across the road to live at Stepping Stones, a Tudor style estate nestled in the rolling hills of Hot Springs, Virginia. The one-of-a-kind manor house and multiple outbuildings, including a greenhouse, guest cottages and several barns and stables, were built over several years by Kenneth Ellis?s mother Florence Adams Ellis, and her husband George A. Ellis, co-founder of E.F. Hutton and Co. Much of the collection was acquired by Florence Ellis and reflects her tastes in Continental and British fine and decorative arts. Her love of fox hunting, horses and dogs is visible throughout the collection. Karin Ellis followed in many of her mother- in- law?s passions including her love of horses and gardening. She was also very active in the community and an advocate of educational opportunities through her volunteer work and her financial support for local and regional scholarships.
