California Regionalists Rising
The American Regionalist movement that took shape in response to the
Depression has come to be recognized as the principal revitalizer of
realism in modern art. While the Midwestern painters went back to the
farm, California regionalists very much went their own way.
A dynamic new art school, Chouinard, attracted painters from all over
the state and established Los Angeles as a center. Â An immense
outpouring of creativity, often socially conscious, deeply imbued with a
love of the California landscape but also fascinated by the new coastal
cities coming into their own, flowed from artists following the beat of
their own drummer as they spread out across the state. Add to that the
influence of the movies (which got influenced right back), and almost no
gallery culture, and you get some idea of the independence and vitality
of California painters.
These guys, and gals, are simply terrific. They made realism new again.
Take a look and youÂ’ll see what weÂ’re talking about.
