July 7 | Gallery Auction
Sparks fly at Michaan's in July, with exciting finds at every turn. A bronze female figure, "Jane"($15,000-20,000) by Angel Botello tops the long list of important works of fine art offered. Featured California painters include Carl Sammons, Millard Sheets, and Jennie Vennerstrom Cannon, founder of the Carmel and Berkeley art colonies. A lyrical abstract painting is offered by the contemporary painter Ira Yeager of San Francisco and the Napa Valley. Thomas Hart Benton's lithograph "White Calf" ($1,500-2,000) awaits collectors, along with works by Calder and Miro. American paintings also include Paul Cornoyer's gorgeous fin-de-siecle view of New York, "Madison Square Park," and "Aspens" ($4,000-6,000) by Bert Geer Phillips of the early Taos art colony. "Sally" ($5,000-$7,000), one of Beth van Hoesen's popular fine art prints of her beloved pet rabbit, is another highlight.
Carved white jade, Meiji Period Japanese porcelain and Tang Dynasty Chinese pottery exemplify the enduring value and eternal beauty of Asian art, a longtime specialty at Michaan's. A highlight in July is the pair of wucai "Dragon and Phoenix" bowls ($8,000-12,000). Estate jewelry spans many styles and periods such as Edwardian, Art Nouveau and highly coveted Art Deco pieces, with diamonds and other gemstones in abundance. A very special find is the sterling and amethyst suite of necklace, bracelet and brooch ($1,000-1,500) by designer Fred Davis, a contemporary of William Spratling. Fine timepieces include the Tiffany & Co. 18k gold and enamel pocket watch ($2,000-3,000).
