April 7 | Gallery Auction
Find your next favorite thing among the treasures in April's exciting Gallery Auction of fine art, furniture and collectibles, Asian art, and fine jewelry. An Eliel Saarinen credenza echoes the Art Deco era, a rising trend with collectors of antique and vintage furniture. A massive, ornate Berkey and Gay cabinet, carved and hand painted, is one of many superb pieces. From Arthur and Lucia Mathews, creators of the California Decorative style, a walnut armchair of noble proportions is offered. Fortuny curtains, Christofle flatware, a Limoges punch set and Tiffany & Co. silver are among the featured lots. Great finds in American art include "Gibraltar," an oil on board by the iconic artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, and spectacular paintings of California's coast by William Ritschel and Mary deNeale Morgan. Lithographs by the inimitable Grant Wood are offered. Carved jade and cinnabar, and a pair of exceptional famille rose porcelain "dragon and phoenix" bowls are among the works of Asian art. The sale opens with period estate jewels and fine designer jewelry, from antique to contemporary. Highlights include a very special coral necklace, the pendant carved in the shape of a Chinese maiden, accented by diamonds and suspended from an 18k gold link chain.
