Archaic Jades from China
THIS AUCTION OF ARCHAIC JADES FROM CHINA, the second this year, offers you a very special selection of rare jades that span from the Neolithic to the Han dynasty: for your convenience, there is a chronology of this long period is on the second inner cover page.
Chinese jade art and the special place it held for the Chinese culture has existed for over 5,000 years, but what is truly fascinating and unique is the unprecedented and widespread global appreciation and expansion that has continued up to the present time.
Of crucial importance is the correct evaluation of the jades to establish their authenticity, followed by the most possible accurate dating based on comparable examples from excavations, and a discussion of their main stylistic features for a better placement within their historical and cultural context. Each jade in this catalogue has been carefully examined, checked for authenticity and described in detail by Prof. Filippo Salviati, who teaches Chinese and Korean Art at Sapienza University of Rome. Prof. Salviati has devoted the last 25 years of his life and carrier to the study of archaic Chinese jades, thus becoming one of the world experts in the very difficult field.
It is also a great pleasure for us to inform you that the long awaited book on the jade-carving tradition of China, written by Prof. Filippo Salviati, has been completed and will be soon available for purchase. The publication includes approximately 350 jades from private collections around the world, far more than the number that was originally planned, and covers the period from the Neolithic (c.4000-2000 BC) to the Han dynasty (206 BC – AD 220), as reported in the title of this important publication: 4000 YEARS OF CHINESE ARCHAIC JADES.
