August Estate Auction
A spellbinding musical clock is a leading attraction at Michaan's in August, with rare gold coins, period jewels, American Impressionist paintings and fine silver among the Estate Auction highlights. The gilded mechanical automaton clock, which features elephants at its base, whirling tropical trees and a tune reminiscent of temple bells, is estimated at $80,000-$100,000. Coin collectors will find highly coveted coins from several fine estates, such as a rare 1895S Morgan silver dollar and numerous uncirculated US $20 gold coins from the 19th and early 20th centuries. California landscapes by William Franklin Jackson (1850-1936) and Carl Sammons (1883-1968) are featured paintings; art collectors will also find works by Chagall, Dali and Leroy Nieman as well as bronzes by Jorge Duron. Prints by Kawase Hasui are among the Japanese woodblocks. Exquisite snuff bottles include designs in carved jade, carnelian, rock crystal quartz and cloisonné enamel. Myriad figures of Buddha and a deep blue underglaze "dragon" bowl ($3,000-$4,000) are among the many Asian treasures. A 14k gold sapphire-studded lorgnette and Art Nouveau stickpin ($700-$900), fine gentlemen's jewelry from Marsh, Cartier, and Black Starr & Gorham, and an array of delicate Victorian jewelry pieces will be sold. Diamonds are abundant in styles to suit every taste and budget. Furniture suites include Chinese rosewood and ebonized Eastlake. Fine textiles range from Chinese embroidered silk robes to the Fortuny-style velvet coverlet ($2,500-$3,000) and tablecloth ($1,000-$1,500) handmade in Venice by Emma Gaggio. Vintage Louis Vuitton luggage from the bygone era of glamorous travel brings a touch of elegant nostalgia to the August auction.
