Items send were not the items as advertised!
Items send were NOT the items as advertised, after extreme slow communication, we had to find out that Stanford was sold to sasaauctioneers, which can't be found on the internet and the self called "new owner" has shown his true face...., which is not real positive. Slowing down answering, after more than 6 months leaning on terms & conditions and saying that text goes over pictures, time span has passed for returns, etc., etc. BEWARE! FRAUD! Also items bought in the after sales were not the items as advertised in the photo's, terms are according to the "new owner" text goes over pictures...., yeah right!!! FRAUD!!

Delayed shipping and rudeness
Stanford delayed shipping the item I purchased 3 weeks, even following phone contact and emails. I was copied on an email from the management to the shipping department telling them to take care of this, and get him (the customer) out of our hair. I’m sure Stanford doesn’t give a hoot whether I do business with them again, but treating a customer with disrespect is unacceptable.

We certainly feel badly about this, especially since we voluntarily shipped the lot to the customer on the house. His purchase was for $150. Our apologies.

Release of Items
With a three day auction of artworks it is understandable that the logistics of getting winning bidders their items would be complicated. It took a month for me to receive my purchase, 2 days shipping was swift, but the auction house actually releasing the item to the shipper dragged on unnecessarily. Do I love what I purchased, yes absolutely, was I patient about the process of shipping, yes. This has been a tough year for everyone, my guess is that the auction house is quite understaffed.

We certainly agree that a month is too long and we appreciate your bringing this to our attention. You paid for your item on October 26th and sent your email to us re: releasing your lot to a local UPS store on October 27th. Thank you for your promptness. Since we had cleared funds along with your release email we immediately released your lot to the local UPS store on October 27th. Yes we are busy but we have no control over when your shipper picks up the lot or ships it. The store does not show us the courtesy of letting us know when the lot is shipped for a successful bidder. Clearly we will rethink the entire process well before our next auction. We certainly apologize to you for it taking so long for you to receive your lot.

I should probably have rated the transaction 5 stars, but there were little inconveniences.
To be fair, our item was part of a three-day auction, and I should cut Stanford a bit of slack, however if the volume is too loud, it should be turned down. The billing could have been accomplished with one invoice, not split into transactions days apart. It would have been nice to be informed of the status of our item shortly after the purchase, not when we phoned almost two weeks later. However, the auction itself went smoothly and the item received was delightful, as described and carefully delivered. And the staff, when contacted, were friendly and helpful.

We had a good relationship with this bidder before this situation. The customer did pay for her purchase but not any shipping cost. It is incumbent upon the successful bidder to contact us regarding shipping and we indicate that in a number of places on-line. We do not recall any sort of phone call about shipping. We did not receive an email. We might have overlooked a phone message (if so our apologies) but we never received an email nor any sort of second phone call. We only became aware of her trying to contact us when we received her review, at which time we got in contact with her. Her item was shipped on October 21st. Our apologies for any mix-up here and we're sorry about any stress you incurred.

This is one of the downsides of doing our own shipping. Most auctioneers farm it out and do not offer in-house shipping. We are excellent packers and take great care with our customers goods, unlike some UPS Stores, etc. We checked into this situation and we were a bit on the slow side, but we did offer 2, 250 lots in this three day auction. In our online catalogues, our invoices, our Terms & Conditions, etc. we mention that it can take a number of weeks to receive lots, as we are not an Amazon, etc. We are happy to recommend outside shippers and a successful bidder can always arrange his own outside shipping. Finally, all of our correspondence with this customer was very amiable. Regardless, please accept our apologies and we hope you give us the opportunity to receive a higher rating in the future.

Great personalized service and shipping
This auctioneer will ship for you or refer you to an outside shipper. I had them ship for me and the package arrived wonderfully packed. In addition, the shipping was timely even though I knew, by choosing Stanford to ship, that it could take up to 25 working days to receive my item. The next time I bid with them, and I will (hopefully successfully!) if I want my winnings in a very short period of time I will take my chances with an outside shipper, hassles and all, and cross my fingers; if I can wait a while I will definitely ship with Stanford since I know them and know they will do a super job.

We do provide in-house shipping but any bidder can, with our help if requested, ship with any shipper he or she chooses. It is obvious from this bidder's comment that he or she is speaking about any auction house anywhere, not specifically to us. As far as our in-house shipping goes, we charge an amount at cost for materials, at cost for the shipping itself, and then a flat $9.50 labor charge to pack and ship the item (s). We feel badly for this bidder but we are only trying not to lose money on the shipping-we are not looking to make any. Finally, the comment was posted as anonymous, which we respect, but this makes it impossible for us to check into the actual circumstances here.

The item was represented correctly. However, the auction house was horrible when it came time to pay-up. I had called shortly after winning to arrange for shipping and payment via check. The first person I spoke to was very nice and was fine with the check taking a bit longer to arrive since it was snail-mail NYC to AZ, she said she would make a note on my account. After I had mailed the check (over the memorial day weekend) I receive the most horrible email from the auction house. Bob Grandfield from Stanford Auctioneers wrote a threatening email about how I was late with my payment and that if I didn't pay-up, they would report me to Live Auctioneers and prevent me from ever bidding on items in the future and that they were going to send me to collections and report me to the 3 credit bureaus. Who treats people like this? Stanford Auctioneers does, and you should be aware of their inexcusable behavior. What ever happened to little bit of customer service? They knew it was coming late, they could have just checked-in instead of jumping straight into break-your-kneecaps bully mode. They also took their time mailing my item after receiving payment (2 weeks), I guess they were trying to punish me for my check delay. Not happy!

This comment was posted as anonymous, which we respect, but this makes it impossible for us to check into the actual circumstances. Our “template” email which the bidder is obviously referring to is reproduced here (we send this approximately 30 days after an auction if we have not received payment). Please note that we do not say that we have to receive payment by a date certain or else … all hell breaks loose, etc.; rather, that we need to hear from the bidder, that’s all. This is buttressed by our comment that we might be able to work out a payment arrangement. So, “Hello Successful Bidder, We are writing regarding your unpaid balance for your purchase (s) made in our recent auctions of October 19th, 20th, and 21st through Live Auctioneers. We understand that you are sending a check but we have not received it. We realize that sometimes the mail can be very slow. Regardless, we do need to hear from you regarding payment by our close of business this coming Wednesday, November 21st. If we don't hear from you by then, policy dictates that we file a dispute with Live Auctioneers about your account. This among other things will severely limit, if not prevent, you from registering for future auctions with Live Auctioneers affiliated auction houses. We also will post the balance due notice on our other on-line bidding platforms. Finally, an affiliated company will notify the major world-wide credit bureaus of the unpaid balance. If you are having trouble paying the invoice amount at this time, we might well be able to work out some sort of payment arrangement. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you and best wishes.”

We offer a 5 % cash discount for purchases paid for by check or wire transfer. Most of our customers utilize and love this feature. To the best of our knowledge we are the only auction house to offer this service. If we were to enable the proprietary online payment system at Live Auctioneers, our customers would not be able to take the 5 % discount. We are still working on a solution. We thank you for your comment.

I believe this house is selling fakes and forgeries. They emailed me asking for payment and threatened to report me to your website, other auction sites, and report me to creditors. It was a very aggressive threat for an initial email, and when I responded to their email they never responded back. I question the authenticity of their artwork based on the past offerings and other sales, and records of similar works throughout the auction market. I believe they are applying fake signatures to artworks which were created AFTER the artist. I had emailed LIVE AUCTIONEERS to report the concern about the authenticity of the artwork they are selling, but did not receive a response. As a result of this experience I am genuinely concerned about the legitimacy of their business and do not feel safe providing them with any personal information, especially for payment, as I feel it would be compromised. I am an honest person, and have purchased lots through LIVEAUCTIONEERS before and have never encountered a situation like this, nor have I ever felt as uncomfortable providing payment information as I do towards Standford Auctions.

This bidder appears sincere but obviously was infuriated with us after receiving our “dunning” email. This communication is sent to a non-paying bidder approximately 30 days after an auction purchase and only after we have already sent the bidder two invoices without a response, or a response without a follow through, like a payment. We absolutely would have responded to a non-paying bidder – we always do. And, the final sentence of our dunning email reads “If you are having trouble paying the invoice amount at this time, we might well be able to work out some sort of payment arrangement.” We always try to work things out. Then, the fact that he mentions that he emailed Live Auctioneers but did not receive a response is surprising to us and should have been troubling to him. We hesitate to comment much more on his review as it is anonymous (which generally we respect but here makes it impossible for us to check into the actual lots), does not put forth any facts such why a particular item might not be authentic, along with auction dates, lot numbers, dates, etc., and makes completely wild claims, which leads us to believe that the bidder who posted this well could be someone who just had had a hard day at the office, had an ax to grind, sipped too much bubbly, and was palpably infuriated, or all of the above. Given that, every auction house, even Sotheby’s and Christie’s, has items that slip by them every now and then. In addition, this review was posted on August 18, 2015, going on five years ago now. None of the employees who would have catalogued items that this bidder might have been referring to are with us any longer. Finally, we do have a Limited Warranty in our Terms & Conditions of Sale (unlike many other auctioneers) which gives a successful bidder the ability to challenge the authenticity of any lot we offer.

They advertised an unframed etching at auction. I put in a bid and won. The next business day I made payment via credit card and requested that they ship it themselves rather than me using a 3rd party shipper. I waited about 4-5 days before emailing them to ask for a tracking number. I got a reply saying that they had up to 25 days to ship, which seemed really excessive considering it was just a flat piece of paper, but I let it go because I read their terms ahead of time and knew it was in there. On day 23, I got an email saying they couldn't find my lot (WHAT KIND OF AUCTION HOUSE LOSES LOTS??) and they would be refunding me with a check. I responded within the hour, asking to instead have my credit card credited since that's how I paid them, but they never responded. AND... I've never received a check. The whole thing seems REALLY SKETCHY at best, like a scam at worst. Finally I posted a review of them on Google and guess what? The owner himself finally emailed me! He blamed his staff for not communicating to me; he said they closed the bank account where my credit card paid into and it was hard to refund my credit card; and he said he thinks my etching was stolen which is why they never shipped it. Last but not least, he offered to make a $500 donation to the charity of my choice if I would remove my review on Google! I have his email to prove all this. I feel like I've been bribed!!! I just want my money back or my etching. I would never recommend this auction house to anyone.

We were certainly partially at fault for upsetting this bidder. Please note that the $500 contribution that she refers to was not conditional on the removal of the Google review. It was a gift as we felt so badly. Here are the pertinent parts of our email on August 25, 2015. We are limited to , 000 characters so can’t reproduce it verbatim: "I have had a chance to look into this matter and my apologies for the way it was handled. We certainly did not handle this very well; actually, we handled it poorly. 1. The reason it sometimes takes up to three or four weeks for us to ship purchased items is because we have a small staff and offer almost , 000 lots per auction weekend. So, we are not able to ship as quickly as we would like. . In your case it took us a while to get back with you because we initially could not find the lot and assumed we would eventually find it. We keep a close eye on the more expensive lots but don't have the person power to watch everything, and as you know your lot sold for $100, not the price of that one would expect stolen. 3. On August 18th, the day of your email, I had asked the appropriate employee to respond to you with the reason why we would issue a check and not a refund. She did not, and she should have. 4. We do have a very good name in our business and would like very much to keep it. We see that you wrote a Google review about your experience with us. We understand you were undoubtedly frustrated and irritated with us, and understandably so. To make up a little for this and your time taken in dealing with us, we would like to make a contribution to the charity of your choice in your name in the amount of $500.00. We hope this will help ease the pain of your experience here. We would also hope that you would retract the Google review, as your experience with us was a rare occurrence, and at all times we were acting in good faith. Again, we are very sorry about this and hope that you will accept our apology.”
