Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the Neo-expressionist style of Romare Bearden (American, 1911-1988). This rich image depicts four main figures swimming in a sea of brush strokes and unified color. At far right, a couple exchanges a bouquet of flowers. The busy scene, which seems to be brimming with life and sound, quickly jumps to the other two figures at left. They are more shadowy; more mysterious. A multi-layered and intriguing composition, this painting would be a striking addition to any gallery. Framed measurements approximately 24.5" x 36.25".
Romare Bearden (American, 1911-1988) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and grew up between the American metropolises of New York and Pittsburgh. Once the Bearden family had settled in New York, their regular guests became intellectuals like W.E.B. DuBois and Paul Robeson, as well as artists, jazz musicians, and many others. Bearden studied abroad during his college years and graduated from New York University in 1935. Bearden would ultimately refine his artistic style a great deal, and he heavily emphasized subjects drawn from African myth and Black culture.
