A Pair of 18th C. Chinese Zitan wood low chairs with a wicker seat. Masterfully constructed with four dowel legs connected by three members and a foot rest extend upward to meet an angular apron which is attached to a square shaped seat. The square Zitan frame holds a wicker seat in place while two posts and a curved splat rise to connect to the horizontal back post. The splat is expertly carved with an upper and lower opening. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages. The fine surface of the wood grain is especially suitable for intricate carvings as can be seen on these magnificent chairs.Dimensions: 27-1/2" H x 23" W x 17-3/8" D (each)
