Kalinga Igorot Bontoc War Shield

The Kalasag or Kalasak is a large rectangular wooden shield used by precolonial Filipinos. The shield is carved out of one piece of hardwood and decorated with intricate carvings with elaborate rattan bindings. The wood comes from native trees such as the dapdap, polay and sablang. The shield usually measured about 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in length and 0.5 m (1.6 ft) in width. This type was widely used throughout the Philippines for warfare.
Carved wooden shield decorated with black geometric designs. Two bands of rattan top and bottom.This shield resembles a stylized human form. These shields were designed to deflect arrows from enemies.
