Description
Browning, Elizabeth Barrett (1801-1861)
Carte-de-visite.
London: Elliott & Fry, ca. 1860.
Albumen photo print mounted on card (pinholes to each corner); 4 x 2 ½ in.
This carte-de-visite featuring Browning with her characteristic dark ringlets was modeled after the engraving by Thomas Oldham Barlow which was used as the frontispiece for her "epic 'verse-novel' of female poetic ambition" Aurora Leigh (1856). The engraving itself was based on a full-length portrait photograph by Macaire, which emphasized Browning's literary legacy by showing her standing next to her writing desk.
