Although he travelled extensively in West and Central Africa as part of his work, collecting works in situ, the majority of his collection came from the "cabinets of curiosity" that abounded in European capitals during the 1920s. It also comes from prestigious galleries (Paris, Brussels, London, New York, etc.). The Dogon are a people renowned for their cosmogony, esotericism, myths and legends. Their population is estimated at around 300,000 souls, living south-west of the Niger loop in the Mopti region of Mali (Bandiagara, Koro, Banka), near Douentza and part of northern Burkina Faso (north-west of Ouahigouya). Villages are often perched atop scree slopes on hillsides, with a unique architecture. The history of the migrations and settlements of the Dogon (around ten main groups, speaking fifteen different languages) is based on several hypotheses. According to some historians, the Dogon fled from an area to the west of their current location, following an attack.
