The painter and draftsman Bela Kadar is one of the most important Hungarian visual artists of thw 20th century. He studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts from 1902. in 1906, he had a highly regarded exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery. In an exhibition at the New Artists' House in Budapest in 1913, it was noted: "Bela Kadar also composes decoratively effective paintings in a mixed style, which he derived from the Greeks and the masters of the early Renaissance to create a respected Baroque style". in 1918, Kadar left his homeland to live in Germany and France. In 1919, he had an exhibition with Hugo Schreiber in Vienna, and in 1920, they both moved to Berlin. In 1923, he had his first soslo exhibition at Herwarth Walden's gallery "Der Sturm", followed by exhibitions with Schreiber and Lothar Schreyer. His paintings were published in Walden's art magazine"Der Sturm". in Berlin, he tranformed his drawing style from distinctive expression to a romantic one, inspired by German Expressionists and particularley the Blue Rider group. (Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc) Kadar also incorporated elements from other contemporary art movements: Cubism, Futurism, Neo-Primitivism, Constructivism (Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Willi Baumeister, Gottfried Honegger), and Metaphysical painting (Pittura metafisica-Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carra, Giorgio Morandi). In the 1920s and 1930s, he exhibited in Budapest, Berlin, Philadelphia, and through the mediation of Katherine Dreier, in the Brooklyn Museum in New York. In Kadar's independent work, rural life form his homeland is poetically interwined with its diverse folklore details and Chassidic faith-in the scenic elements, color harmonies, and line work.
