First Edition, Volume I (of 2).Stewart arrived in America in 1832 as an officer in the British army. Seeking adventure, he headed west to the Rockies, where he spent several years engaged in the fur trade and meeting many famous trappers, mountain men, explorers, and traders, including the French-Canadian Cree hunter Antoine Clement, with whom Stewart had a ten-year same-sex relationship. Though it is thought that Webb wrote this narrative of his events, Stewart's writings and dicta were the primary sources. 255 pages, first edition calf.
