Old Navajo memory aid painting on muslin depicting a Bear. Early to mid 20th century. A naive, stylized image of a bear with red and white-gray stripe lines extending vertically on the body in front of the legs and over the back.
Memory aid paintings, both on cloth and on paper were used as a preliminary sketch for sand painting designs made by Navajo men.
Pigments on muslin cloth. Unframed. Held to the mount with tape (removable). Labels under the cloth, on the mount (see photos).
PAINTING - 6 1/4" w. x 7 3/4" h.
