Description

A Royal Naval Artillery Volunteers Officer's Sword, And A Royal Naval Officer's Sword The First By Kenning, Little Britain, London, Circa 1880, The Second By Salter, Sword Cutler To H.R.H. The Duke Of Sussex, Corner Of The Adelphi, 73 Strand, London, Circa 1830 The first with bright tapering double-edged blade (areas of rust patination) cut with two central fullers and etched along one side with maker's details and crowned royal arms between foliage within a shaped panel, and along the other with crowned fouled RNAV anchor between further scrolling foliage en suite, regulation ormolu hilt of simulated bars against a stippled ground and incorporating a crowned RNAV fouled anchor in an oval, folding inner-guard, lion-head pommel and back-piece in one, wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, and complete with its bullion sword-knot (some fraying), in original leather scabbard with linear engraved ormolu mounts, and two rings for suspension; the second with curved pipe-back blade (areas of rust damage) with double-edged quill point, regulation ormolu hilt of simulated bars against a stippled ground and incorporating an applied crowned fouled anchor in an oval, folding inner-guard, lion-head pommel and faceted back-piece in one, and wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, in original leather scabbard (crazed, seam open) with linear engraved ormolu mounts including locket with maker's details on a scroll, two rings for suspension, and retaining most of its original gilding (2) 81 cm. and 79 cm. blades Footnotes: Provenance The Second, Bonhams Oxford, Antique Arms and Militaria, 13 May 2009, lot 70 For more information regarding Salter see Leslie Southwick, London Silver-hilted Swords..., 2001, pp. 215-16 The Royal Naval Artillery Volunteers, sometimes referred to as the Royal Naval Artillery Reserve, was a British military reserve force which served between 1873 and 1892 For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
