Description
A group of three copies of reports and statements issued after the Pearl Harbor attack comprising nearly 350pp. in total with fascinating content about the attack and its aftermath. All three are undated but ca. 1946. The first is titled ‘A Report of Army Pearl Harbor Board’ appointed by Secretary of War, 299pp. legal folio; the second is titled ‘Navy Court of Inquiry’, 70pp. 4to; while the third is titled ‘Statement of the Secretary of War Regarding the Pearl Harbor Disaster’, 22pp. 4to. Together with a copy of a press release for the Aug. 30, 1945 announcement by President Harry S. Truman, Aug. 30, 1945, confirming that he has read the reports. On August 29, 1945, Truman released Army and Navy investigation reports which found commanders in Washington, especially former secretary of state Cordell Hull and army chief of staff General George Marshall, largely responsible for the lack of preparedness at Pearl Harbor. Congress postponed an investigation while the nation was at war. Germany’s surrender on April 8, and the formal surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945, created an opportunity for Congress to dive deeper into the disaster. Expected toning and wear, otherwise very good.
