Description
1889 HEBREW Torah FAMOUS Onkelos Targum Jewish Vilnius Lithuania Russia Vilna 4v
A rare, 19th-century printing of the Hebrew Torah. In the 1st-century, a translation was done by a Tannaic Jewish convert named Onkelos. His targum proved to be one of the most authoritative translations of the Torah and was utilized for centuries, even into the 19th-century. Onkelos, a direct descendent of Roman emperors, converted to Judaism and his interpretation of the Torah helped solidify Jewish tradition.
While numerous examples of this and other Jewish texts were printed in the 19th-century, few are as curious as this. This particular set was published in Vilnius, Lithuania while it was under Russian control. Census records indicate that the Jewish population approached nearly half of the population in Vilnius at the time of publication. It would be expected that Hebrew law texts such as this be found in Vilnius during the 19th-century.
