Description
1840 RARE Edgar Allan Poe 1ed Fall of House Usher Literature Bentley Miscellany
“I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher.”
? Edgar Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher
Bentleys Miscellany was a mid-17th-century English magazine created by Richard Bentley, who asked Charles Dickens to be the very first editor. Dickens was only editor for a few short years, but his influence and legacy caused other notable writers to have their works published in Bentleys, such is the case with Edgar Allan Poe.
In the 1840 issue of Bentleys, Edgar Allan Poe published his short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” – the first British edition of Poes horror story. The story follows an unnamed narrator to a friends home who believes his house to be alive. Poe expresses themes of death and dying, fear, mystery, and human identity. This volume also contains four pirated or uncredited printings of Poes works including The Visionary and The Duc de lOmelette”.
