Thomas Rowlandson, Early 19th C. Hand-Colored Etching, "Easter Sunday, Or The Cockney Hunt"

A lovely hand-colored etching by English caricaturist and printmaker Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827) entitled "Easter Monday, Or The Cockney Hunt." Signed in stone as "Rowlandson 1807" at lower left. The title of the work is printed at bottom center. Also printed at lower right: "Design'd etched & pub'd July 14 1811 / by T Rowlandson No 1 James Street / Adelphi London." Expected wear including isolated foxing and surface abrasions. Mounting remnants near the four corners and edges well outside of the image. Else near fine with a deep plate mark. Untrimmed to an overall size of 10.75" x 17.5."

The print depicts two hapless horseback riders engaged in a fox hunt: the first, a red-coated country squire, nearly leap-frogging over his horse's head in his earnestness; and the second, a bonneted woman riding side-style, brandishing a whip like a cavalry saber. Rowlandson, a skilled caricaturist, has exaggerated the features and gestures of the figures to great comedic effect. Rowlandson's satirical treatment of Georgian society, politics, and mores provides us with some of the most indelible images of the period.
