Description
Julia Parker (Native American, Miwok Pomo, 1928-present) Acorn Gathering Basket, woven willow, ca. late 20th century CE. A hand-woven willow basket that was traditionally used for acorn gathering, made with a loose, open weave, by the famous artist Julia Parker, a member of the Coast Miwok-Kashaya Pomo tribe. Parker was orphaned at an early age and fostered by German-American family before attending the Stewart School in Nevada. She married in 1948 and worked at Yosemite National Park, forming a bond with her grandmother-in-law, Lucy Telles, a renowned basket weaver. Parker eventually learned to weave from her husband's family, studied with master weavers, and began teaching basketry and cultural history - such as acorn processing- at the park. She has had several notable exhibitions and co-founded the California Indian Women's Basket Association. Size: 12" Diameter x 9" H (30.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
