Harry Truman White House China, Lenox Exhibit Dinner Plate
A Truman White House (1945-1953) exhibit dinner plate, part of a special edition made by Lenox and used when presidential china is put on display. Beautiful ivory color porcelain dinner plate features the Great Seal of the United States in gilt with a thick border of celadon green flanked by an etched gold band and gold rim. The famed Lenox official watermark is present to the underside, and reads, “The White House 1951 / American by Design / Made in the U.S.A. / Exhibit Collection for Lenox Corporation 2010". Measures 10.75'' in diameter. In near fine condition.
In 1951, the State Dining Room of the White House was remodeled to feature soft green walls. First Lady Bess Truman selected a 1,572 piece service with a coordinating green band from Lenox. This pattern of green and gilt is the first set of White House china to feature the new presidential seal. Following the end of World War II, Harry Truman had issued an executive order in 1945 to standardize the presidential seal; he had the head of the eagle turned toward the olive branch, representing peace, instead of toward the arrows, representing war.
