ERIC ROBERTSON
1887 - 1941
Considered one of the most talented students of his generation, Eric Robertson was born at Dumfries and trained as an architect before studying art. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and by symbolist artist John Duncan, through whom he met his future wife, Cecile, the daughter of E.A. Walton. Robertson’s subject matter was varied, as were the mediums in which he worked, and he had the power to shock: his paintings of nudes offended the Edinburgh establishment. Robertson moved to Liverpool following the break-up of his marriage in 1923. He subsequently re-married, but struggled to get commissions and turned to commercial art in order to support his family. He died at The Wirral, Cheshire.
