Walter Elmer Schofield (American 1867-1944) Oil on Canvas entitled "The Cliff Village".
Signed Schofield Lower Left. 31" x 27" overall, 23.5" x 19.5" sight size.
Label on verso from Grand Central Art Galleries. 15 Vanderbilt Ave. New York, N.Y. Label dated November 26 1929. Label also reads, handwritten in pencil, "W.E. Schofield" and "The Cliff Village".
Owner of painting is niece of Virginia Marshall Zabriskie, well known owner of Zabriskie Gallery New York and Paris. Gifted from Ms. Zabriskie to owner's parents and then to current owner.
Walter Elmer Schofield (1867-1944) Born in Philadelphia, but living his adult life partially in Europe. Studied Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 1889-1892. In 1892 Schofield traveled to France studying at the Académie Julian, under some of its esteemed and famous instructors including Bouguereau, Ferrier, Aman-Jean and Doucet. Schofield’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institute among many others.
Appears to be unlined and unvarnished. No overpainting. Very slight and scattered cracquelure. Overall fine condition. A Few areas of abrasion to edge of frame. Not examined out of the frame.
