A very nice polished whale tooth and tortoiseshell cane. The sperm whale ivory handle is 3 1/4" long and 1 1/4" at its widest. It is a polished tooth with its natural opening on one side. It is mounted on a stiff shaft threaded with multiple, thin, tapering tortoiseshell discs. (There are no stress cracks sometimes seen on such construction.) It terminates with a 7/8" white metal and iron ferrule. The overall length is 31 1/2" and the condition is very good. It may be English or Continental, ca 1880. It is a fine piece with unusual materials and construction. Estimate: $650-$850.
