Description
Collection of (16) double-weight photos documenting a ca. 1930 Hollywood costume party of Marion Davies and Wm. Randolph Hearst. Sixteen double-weight silver-bromide prints, approx. 7" x 8.5", each depicting the various Hollywood celebrity attendees in costume at a ca. 1930 costume party given by Marion Davies and Wm. Randolph Hearst. The guests pictured include Clifton Webb, Marilyn Miller, William Haines, Ruth Chatterton, Boris Karloff (heavily made up as a clown), Norma Shearer, Basil Rathbone, Gloria Swanson, and others. The location is most likely Davies' Santa Monica beach house, which became known as "The Versailles of Hollywood" due to the lavish parties thrown there. The presence of William Haines and Marilyn Miller helps establish the date, as each saw their Hollywood careers ending shortly thereafter, with Haines, a frequent Marion Davies co-star, becoming the first major film performer to come out as gay. Haines is pictured four times throughout these images, in two different costumes, as is Davies. Each of the photos retains adhesive on back from scrapbook mounting, though images show virtually no signs of damage. To the best of our knowledge these photos are unknown and unpublished.
