Description
WWI Trio, British War Medal 1914-1918, Victory Medal and 1914-15 Star and dog tag for Captain Cyril. M. Longbotham the star and dog tag named Lieut Longbotham,72nd Punjabis of the North west Frontier Force, Indian Army, together with a set of miniatures and ribbon bar, also a photo of C.M Longbotham, on polo horse, eight photographs of Longbotham and his soldiers in the trenches, a photo postcard of Longbotham in hospital, a photo album showing various company groups, as well as scenes of India and miniature versions of the trench scenes, also cemetery photographs and obituary newspaper cuttings. The lot also contains a letter written in pencil from Longbotham to Lieutenant R. Whittle Royal Field Artillery (see separate lot in this sale) dated 15th April 1915 describing life in the trenches, 'we have only had 5 or 6 casualties since we took over the firing line, escaped from snipers' and 'I here they are going to push in another part of the line, certainly they won't push here' Lieutenant Reg Whittles the recipient of the letter married a miss Doris Longbotham (sister of Captain Cyril Cyril Longbotham) whilst on leave. See the medal group, sword and photographs relating to Lieutenant Reg Whittles included in this sale. Captain C. M. Longbotham was the son of a well known family of Halifax solicitors. After his education he was articled at his Father's practice but after two years decided to change career and at the age of 20 joined the Volunteer Battalion of the West Riding regiment. Longbotham joined the regular army and was posted in 1911 to the 2nd Leicester's then serving in India. Here he was transferred to the 72nd Punjabis of the North west Frontier Force, Indian Army. When war broke out in 1914 Longbotham was at home on leave but immediately presented himself for to the war office. He was posted to the 11th Service Battalion of the King's Liverpool and was in charge of the King's Bodyguard at the Royal Pavillion during the King's visit. Longsbotham assisted in training the Liverpools but in March 1915 was cabled to proceed to France to join the Meerut Division of the Indian Expeditionary Force and was posted to the 58th Vaughan's Rifles. He served in Flanders and was wounded on 20th May 1915 in the Neuve Chapelle sector by a piece of shrapnel to the ear drum but also suffered from gas and concussion and was invalided home. Despite several attempts to rejoin regular service in the Army Longbotham never did fully recover and died at the age of 32 whilst in Switzerland where it was believed that the climate would restore his health.
