An Album of 10 watercolors of Lohan figures, each painted ongold speckled paper and named 'nanyudingyun' etc, the oval watercolors mounted on thick paper , each205 x 130mm. [China: early 20th century]. Manuscript title page and end leaf, both, on speckled gold paper, the end text discussing Emperor Daoguang, of the Qing Dynasty and his 34 year reign . All in a concertina format album, original wooden boards, upper cover with painted title on linen 'Danyunpeng 10 Lohan Drawings'. Condition: mounting paper lightly browned; small chip to lower board. An interesting album of Chinese drawings of Lohans probably executed at the turn of the 20th century, presumably sold to western visitors. The Lohan represents the perfect man striving to better himself in this life, and in Chinese art is often potrayed as a foreigner, with shaved heads and wearing robes of an Indian monk.
