BUDDHIST LOHANS. A Collection of eight watercolors on silk.[China: Qing Dynasty, c.1890]. 8 watercolors of Lohans, each c. 320 x 205mm, on silk and mounted on white paper backed on blue, blue cloth borders, wooden rollers. Condition: several with clean tears near rollers. AN ATTRACTIVE COLLECTION OF WATERCOLORS OF BUDDHIST FIGURES. The Lohan, or Buddhist Saint , plays an important role in Hinayana Buddhism. He represents the perfect man striving to better himself in this life. When portrayed in Chinese art, the Lohan are always portrayed as a foreigner, dark in complexion, with shaved heads and round eyes, and wearing the robes of an Indian monk. There are 18 Lohan figures that are portrayed, this set being 8 of the group.
