The author is familiar with the subject Model 1875 Gatling Gun, having examined this item in the private arms collection of Peter and Patty Murray. The history of this item begins with its original shipment by the Gatling Gun Co. (a subsidiary of Colt's Patent Fire Arms Mfg. Co. , Inc.), Hartford, on October 13th 1875. The following information appears in the Gatling Gun Company shipping ledger, in the writer's collection (page 50): NUMBER OF GUN: 135 - CALIBER: .45[-70] - ADDRESS: United States Army - DATE OF SHIPMENT: Oct. 13.75 - The MGM film studios adapted Serial No. 135 Model 1875 Gaffing to firing "5-in-1" blanks, in the 1930s. This adaptation permitted the use of No. 135 in various films over the years. No. 135, complete with carriage and trunnion, and with tripod, has an intriguing history, therefore, beginning with real life adventures in the hands of the United States Army, and a rebirth of sorts in the 1930s, for adaptation and use in the world of make-believe, the films of MGM studios. It is a pleasure to be able to document this rare and intriguing artifact of American history.
