About the artist:
The French painter Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) studied at the ecole des Beaux-Arts (1944-45) where his work came to the attention of Francis Gruber. A critical success almost immediately, he was the joint winner, together with Bernard Lorjou, of the Prix de la Critique in 1948. Committed to realistic art, rather than abstract, his joined the group Homme-Temoin in 1949. A highlight of a career with many honors was the opening of a museum dedicated to his work near Mishima, Japan in 1973.
