The two letters speak of the recent passing of his beloved Charlie, and despite many offers of a new dog from friends and strangers alike, Steinbeck is cautious: "Since Charley died, at least a hundred people have offered me dogs, but that's not the way to do it. I'll want to see the sire and know the dam and watch the litter for a time - not that one is better, but that one is more like me than another." Steinbeck's reluctance to sign his letters is displayed here, as he closes the letter with "Yours, (Janet please sign for me) / test signature / John Steinbeck / (you can do it fine)." (2)
