Description
[STEINBECK, John]. Travels with Charley ephemera.[JOHN STEINBECK] Travels with Charley Reviews (file folder). A group of newspaper and magazine clippings regarding the book and Steinbeck ca. 1962-63.; [JOHN STEINBECK]. "Dogs" (file folder). Correspondence to John Steinbeck relating to dogs including notes from fans of Travels with Charley, etc., with 2 autograph letter drafts in pencil on yellow legal sheets, with typed transcriptions, in response. The two letters speak of the recent passing of his beloved Charlie, and despite many offers of a new dog from friends and strangers alike, Steinbeck is cautious: "Since Charley died, at least a hundred people have offered me dogs, but that's not the way to do it. I'll want to see the sire and know the dam and watch the litter for a time - not that one is better, but that one is more like me than another." Steinbeck's reluctance to sign his letters is displayed here, as he closes the letter with "Yours, (Janet please sign for me) / test signature / John Steinbeck / (you can do it fine)." (2)
