STEINBECK, John. Two manuscript letters.Dated January 31, 1963. Pencil on yellow legal sheet. 1 page. Steinbeck writes a letter of thanks to an aquaintance in Amarillo, Texas who has sold his gun. With 1 page typed letter dated January 14, 1963 from said aquaintance, a Mr. Lawrence R. Hagy indicating the weapon in question brought $112.50 for Steinbeck. [With:] 1 page autograph letter in pencil on yellow legal sheet, marked in pen at heading "Sent 12/27/63." An enthusiastic recommendation by Steinbeck for a Guggenheim Fellowship for Michael Terence McNally. Mr. McNally had worked as a tutor for the Steinbecks' two sons for 10 months in 1961-1962. "From this I was made aware not only of his education and erudition, but also his patience, hard work and will power which was made evident through the effect he had on two teen age boys." With 4 typed sheets of related correspondence. [And:] 1 yellow sheet typed (recto and verso) letter dated April 10, 1963 addressed to Graham Watson, Esq. wherein Steinbeck mentions Pascal Covici ("He is my oldest publishing friend and editor") and then the news of Charley's declining health: "He is at the vets in the country with a bad case of dropsy. They don't know yet whether he will come out of it. We are very sad."(2)
